Skyscapes

I see it often off to the west as the sun drops in the sky. A little break in the clouds and the sun rays burst out. I've always called it "God Light".

So often in New Mexico the clouds are racing across the sky. It is almost like the clouds leap from the land to fly away.

When you look across the open land it is as if you can see it go on - forever. Then, just above the land, the clouds are arranged in the same way. Clouds forever.

The mountains line the eastern edge of the Española valley turn crimson at sunset. It is easy then to understand their Spanish given name - the Sangre de Cristos (the Blood of Christ) mountains.

Snow-

The high, clear winter sky in Taos, New Mexico is crisp with warm sunlight. On the snow banks, the pure blue shadows glisten.

The exercise began as an idea to see the snow melting mud in a traveled road as something other than brown. There I saw the oranges, lavenders and deep purples in the frozen tapestry of mud.

The grandeur of this Montana lake and mountain is an exciting subject to paint with various neutrals. The neutrals were all obtained by mixing together appropriate bright pigments either as complements or primary triads.

My New Mexico backyard is a wonderful study in openness and simplicity. When snow is on the ground it can serve as a study subject for warm and cool palettes. This is my Cool Study.

I did this complete painting with the divots in the snow so that I could remember the stillness of winter and the long long shadows. An underwash of yellow lets it be known that the bright New Mexico sun still creates its winter glow.

Just at first light I looked out from my front door to my studio, just paces away. The sky was pink and the pile of snow upon the bird bath recorded the night's progress in inches. All was silent. Even the chickens and pigeons stayed quietly inside their houses. I painted this using layers of staining pigments, one over the other. What a treasure.

Still Life Subjects

How I love onions and garlics! I did this little painting to try to show the delicate, transparent skins of these beautiful vegetables. Then, the publisher wanted to use it to show a "high key" painting - a painting with mid to light values. It was perfect.

EC-53

"Onions & Garlic 1 " by Jan Hart

Original Watercolor painting on watercolor paper,7" x 10.5" image, unmatted.

After the graphic artists began to work on the book pages that dealt with "keys" or values - they called to say they needed a low key painting of the same subject. This was the wonderful result! I have no idea where the light source is - perhaps inside the onion and garlic themselves!

The very last painting I did for the book was this one - of the three tomatoes! The publishers wanted to have me illustrate shadows and reflected light and color in three different circumstances. This was the result!

The studies for a Split Complement color scheme all involved candles. In this one I used three strong, staining paints - quinacridone sienna and magenta opposed by Phthalo turquoise. Look at the beautiful hues that resulted!

For this Split-complementary study, I used four paints. Two, as complements, allowed me to achieve some lovely neutrals.

What excitement to mix three very cool paints in various ways and then, for dessert, to paint the bright vermillion in the candle flames.

For a wonderful change, a high key candle painting using the same four paints as I used for "Candle Glow 1". Note how the pure blue vibrates when surrounded by the warm colors!

Just three paints were used for this painting - Quinacridone burnt scarlet, Ultramarine turquoise and Cobalt Blue. By mixing them strongly, a relative low keyed painting of mid to dark values. The flames and reflections provide the relief.

Water Scapes

I sat by the pier and watched the gently rolling water wondering how I would paint it. Finally - in my mind, I broke it down into steps beginning with soft reflections from the sky. Then, slowly I would apply shapes of reflections from all around, finally ending with the darkest shapes. I love this painting.

I decided to try to paint water on Yupo, a plastic mylar product that is not paper. Because there is no absorption possible, it is very difficult to apply layers. The under layer just dissolves into the applied layer. Still, with a very light touch - it is possible.

I decided to experiment with some of the Interference paints - those that are transparent and nearly invisible on white paper but display iridescence when painted over dark undercolors. After I painted the dark reflections in the water, I applied slow, horizontal washes of Interference blue and red as well as Duochrome Cabo Blue. This painting changes subtly as you view it from different angles.

On Yupo plastic, I played again with the subject of water. Here I turned the Yupo to allow the applied paint to run. When a small imperfection on the surface interrupted the flow, I allowed it and later added a small rock or shell object to the painting. I intend to experiment more with YUPO!
