	Landscapes	TThe mountains line the eastern edge of the Española valley turn crimson at sunset. It is easy then to understand their Spanish given name - the Sangre de Cristos (the Blood of Christ) mountains. 		Using a tetradic palette, this painting was such fun to explore in terms of colors, color relationships and the beautiful California shapes. 		The most interesting part of this painting is not visible. I painted it in the daytime, en plein aire while imagining it at night. Now, that was a mind blower! 		CChinle is a geologic formation found throughout the southwest - and is often called the Badlands in northern New Mexico. This was a great subject for granulating pigments like Zoisite Genuine, Cobalt Violet, Lunar Earth and Manganese Blue. It felt like I was using the earth itself to paint with! 		The Olympic Peninsula peers over the rocky cliff edge just as the sun dips beyond the trees. Layers and layers of sedges and grasses mark the descent to the Pacific. 		Mixing near neutrals is an exciting process. In the sky are mixes of three primaries; In the mountains and trees are various mixes of complements. Color is subtle but radiantly beautiful. 		This is a painting of one of my favorite places - Plaza Blanca or "the White Place" where Georgia O'Keeffe loved to walk and paint. In this painting I used some techniques like adding salt, scraping and using some granulating pigments for texture. The soft,light sage sits quietly next to the spreading piñon tree in a typically found contrast. 		This painting is purposely partially colored. The lower part is just a near black and white of the paper. The process is called underpainting in which the lights and darks are layed in first to be followed by the color. 		Another version of the orchard and this time it is painted using an experimental addition of Zoisite into the mixed greens for an unexpected texture and dance. 		Using a six - color palette of Aureolin Yellow, Ultramarine Turquoise, Cobalt Blue, Carbazole Violet, Quinacridone Magenta and Quinacridone Sienna - colors mix beautifully and nice glazes are possible! 	Portraits	Even though I haven't thought of myself as a portrait painter per se, I loved painting this man and the imagined surroundings of flowers and vines. 	Portraits	The warm colors of her skin against the cool darks of her hair were especially exciting to paint. Then the wonderful pinks and patterns in her sari . What a treat to paint this woman. Rocks		The rocks I love most are those at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. They are what brought me to this part of the country, and they are what continues to excite and mystify. 		When it snows in the north, the snow that piles up on the rock layers appears to drift in an out of the snowy sky. There are no shadows - just incredibly vibrant colors. Shadows		"A beautiful iris from my garden oranges to surround it!" The vigas that extend from the adobe walls cast lovely shadows that look like rows of sun dials.
