Animals

.This painting illustrates the beauty of some of the iridescent pigments - Sapphire blue, Iridescent Violet, Copper, Iridescent Green. It is just a small painting of a very small but beautiful bird.

.This painting was not published in the book, but is one of my favorites, probably because this little chicken is one of my favorites. I wanted to paint her as if I was looking down at her - but until I added the rich horizontal shadows, she looked as if she'd fall over.

This little dog is likely 1/2 Beagle and 1/2 Blue Healer, a real Española mixed breed. He picked me out at the local shelter. His mottled "pointilistic" coat is perfectly suited to paints like Lunar Black and Zoisite genuine.

 

 

Here is my favorite pigeon, Raoul with one of the many babies he and his mate have raised. This study was not included in the book but so aptly demonstrates a loose analogous palette.

.Here is Seurat running! His tongue is nearly as long as his legs! But he's fast! This sketch was done on yupo, which is plastic - not paper. You can see how the paints like to puddle until they dry. I enjoy yupo just to watch the paints do their thing!

 

Using just two colors - yellow and purple - all of the neutrals and pale notes are possible. A white pigeon in flight is more about not painting than painting!

Seeing the endangered scarlet macaws in Costa Rica was a trip highlight! There - above us in the sea almond trees they carried on with their raccous courtship display as a prelude to mating - even though they mate for life! What beautiful birds! This is a particular favorite painting of mine.

 

Another sketch of my white pigeon using just two paints to create the wonderful subtle shades of reds and turquoise blues.

One of my favorite palettes for painting white or delicate subjects is Cobalt blue, Rose madder genuine and Aureolin yellow. These three luminous transparents create beautiful glow.

Driving back to the ferry from Port Townsend, I love to pass through the old town of Port Gamble. There on an early fall day I saw this house - and photographed it to paint. It has the feeling of a place I'd like to come home to.

Buildings

Christmas night at El Santuario in Chimayô, New Mexico is beautiful. The path is lined with lighted farolitos to keep the traveler safe.

There is a beautiful, red roofed lighthouse complex that sits watchfully above Port Townsend on the Olympic Penninsula, Washington. The buildings almost appear to topple down toward the sea.

 

Floral & Vegetative Subjects

This painting began as an exploration of pigment types - paints that granulate and group together, organic paints that flow so beautifully and those inorganics that drop into a wash and stay put. Out of the experiment came an exciting, powerful iris!

Here is the study of the iris that started it all! I played and just watched the pigments dance together!

Peering through the Costa Rican jungle one can see the vague tree forms and hanging vines in the misty light.

Using a six - color palette of Aureolin Yellow, Ultramarine Turquoise, Cobalt Blue, Carbazole Violet, Quinacridone Magenta and Quinacridone Sienna - colors mix beautifully and nice glazes are possible!

This painting was done by layering just three paints over each other and drying inbetween. Glazing is one of my favorite watercolor techniques and produces such vibrant paintings.

YUsing high chroma, bright paints weakly (lots of water) and strongly can produce a study like this!

This little study was done using one very hot pink (Opera) and several low chroma, muted paints.

Using just the low chroma muted paints such as Napthamide Maroon, English Red Earth and Venetian Red, the softly antique rose study comes into its own.

The combination of high and low chroma paints produces a study of strong contrasts - and it reminded me of a mix of chocolate and raspberries.

This little painting is a gem and one that was most exciting to paint. I used a tetradic color scheme composed of two sets of complements - Green Gold, Cobalt Blue, Manganese Violet and Quinacridone Sienna! You can see these four paints placed side by side on the upper part of the iris - and then muted and mixed throughout the rest!

A cool study using a predominance of cool tetradic paints, Ultramarine Turquoise and Cobalt Blue along with cool Quin Magenta and just a few notes of Quin Sienna.

Hot and warm! The warmer tetradic paints predominate with the cool notes of Ultramarine Turquoise and Cobalt Blue scattered about.

Using just three paints - Cobalt Blue, Rose Madder Genuine and Aureolin - this little sketch shows the incredible variety possible.

Just three paints! The same three luminous paints as used above are again perfect for the delicate but strong subject.

This little abstract iris study was used to explore different blues and violets by different manufacturers.

 

 

How I love painting this yellow poppy! The excitement is in the curled petals that bounce the light creating hotter colors! This phenomenon of reflected light is something I search for every sunny day!

This painting is definitely upbeat! A wildly bright red iris playing against greens and blues and oranges as well as shapes that nearly explode! What a joy to paint!

Donna used to have these two Douglas Firs in her backyard. All the varieties of greens were basically created by mixing blues and yellows. The only store bought tube greens used are Green Gold and Ultramarine Turquoise. Just look at the variety!

This was a little study done to experiment with the tetradic color scheme - using yellow green opposite deep violet and cyan opposite red orange. The deliberate downward drooping brush strokes help identify the type of tree.

Wonderful cottonwood colors in the fall!

When I arrived in Costa Rica I was so amazed to find so many colors besides green! There were the blues, lavenders and yellows with bright shimmers of reds! What a color feast!

Using mostly greens on this handmade paper with deckled edges, this painting narrows the range of colors to mostly greens, made by mixing blues and yellows.

Some wonderful textures can be attained by using granulating paints such as Cobalt Violet, Manganese Violet, Zoisite Genuine and Lunar Earth. This little sketch is such fun to explore with your eyes.

As you walk by a painting containing iridescent paints you see the sheen and glitter. It is very experiential and always changing.
