Welcome to HartNews, Volume 06, Issue 4!
So...What is HartNews? HartNews is my attempt to write about life and watercolor from where I see it. As a teacher, I enjoy passing on some of the things I think about or do in watercolor. As a fellow human, I wish to pass on some of the things that inspire me - or make me laugh!. I've included you in this issue - you who are painters, friends, former guests and/or family - some of you without your expressed permission. So
please reply and ask to be removed from this mailing list if you'd rather not get HartNews editions - or just delete me! Originally, I intended to make HartNews a monthly event. Now, more realistically, I see it as a quarterly or bi-annual publication. If you have something you'd like add or say, just email me! and please feel free to pass this on to your friends... If you'd like to see the back issues - just check the Archives above - more demos, etc.
I started this as a Fall issue - and just got bogged down with the book. So now we are immersed into winter and the Holiday season in northern New Mexico. And, I loved our first (and maybe only) snow!

As you may know, I'm busy writing and painting this year! The book, "A Watercolor Artist's Guide to Exceptional Color" is expected to be available in January, 2008. And I just made my second deadline with Batch 2 on Dec. 8 - the second 2/3 of the book!
I'm very excited about this. So far I've done over 100 paintings or sketches (mostly small) and I've had some help, too, from colleagues who have contributed. I think and hope that it'll be a dynamite book! I still have a lot more to go!
The book is intended to cover color issues that are important to the artist and especially to the watercolorist - differences in watercolor pigments, color relationships & how they work, making color decisions, color schemes, painting various subjects, etc. and will include not just "what and how to" but "why." Nothing held back - just everything I understand about color!
|
|
|
Here is what a "batch" looks like before I box it and Fed Ex it to London. Each folder is an "article" or Chapter containing text, paintings, sketches, color swatches, diagrams, etc. The book will be published by Walter Foster Publishers and is due out January, 2008. I will have signed copies to sell through my site.

The Visual/Pigment Color Wheel above is the basis for many color relationships and noted color schemes. The painting, Butterfly illustrates the use of the three non-staining, transparent watercolor pigments along with some new developments in pigments - iridescent, duochromes and interference pigments. What fun!

The Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, Arizona workshop is an annual favorite. This time the focus of the workshop is COLOR and watercolor pigments. Beginning with how we see color, students will learn about color schemes, color relationships, mixing, pigment choices and have opportunities to experiment with some of Daniel Smith’s latest pigments. For more information, please see the Coconino Web site here. (this will likely be updated soon but contact numbers are good.)

What's Going on at Ranchito San Pedro?
|
Some of the best news here is that the chickens have grown up and are laying beautiful eggs! Because I have several different kinds of hens, I get multi-colored eggs which guests in the cabins really enjoy! Take a look! In shade you can see the colors, but in direct light - the form, core shadow and reflected light on each egg is spectacular. Perfect for a Colorist - & I sell them for $4/dozen. But what about that blue egg?

|
Grissel, below, is an Araucana mix with ear tuffs, beard, muff and now a suspected layer of beautiful blue eggs! The Araucanas originated in Chile and were imported in the 1930's. Because she sports a tail, she cannot be considered a true Araucana. The Americaunas (mixes) lay green eggs regularly. Blue eggs are relatively rare. Are they blue inside? |

Carumba, far left is a beautiful Silver Gurundot - with feathers on her legs.
I currently have too many roosters. One of the Black Astralorp roosters that I call the "Blues Brothers" (left) is sweet, the other quite aggressive. Their names are Herald and Stew. Stew is destined to live up to his name if he doesn't calm down.

Little Pepe is a feisty Sumatran rooster with a "little animal's" attitude. I just couldn't resist his beautiful iridescence in painting him for the book. I just went a little overboard.

I and my animal friends wish you a peaceful & energetic New Year!
