Friday, February 19 Arrive in Costa Rica

• Arrival of all parties to Costa Rica. We will plan to arrive in San Jose (SJO) on the evening of Friday, January 30. A 5 minute cab ride will get you to the B&B where you will be greeted by Jan and the B&B hosts! Most all flights arrive late in the evening. We'll meet and greet and then get some rest. High speed WiFi Internet available.

Day 1. Saturday, February 20 To the Osa Peninsula& Sombra de la Lapa. COLORS

Here's what we need:

• Deposit of $800 holds your place. Email Jan here to say you are coming!
• Your next payment of $800 is due by September 15.
• Your last payment of $895 is due by November 15, 2009. Then you can relax for the holidays and just look forward to 2010!

• Cost $2495 US per person, shared occupancy if you reserve by Octover 15. After October 15 the price is $2695. Not including airfare to and from San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO). Includes all accommodations in Costa Rica including all meals except for 1 at the beginning of the trip (when you arrive) and 1 at the end (just before you leave) plus one dinner in town, all transportation while in Costa Rica, all watercolor and sketching instruction from Jan and full time care/housing with Sombra de la Lapa. Does not include liquor.
  
• Payment Schedule. Reservations on a first come basis made with initial deposit to Jan.

  Initial Deposit • $800now reserves your place.

  $895 by November 1 - Last Payment and you are paid up before the holidays.

• Materials List & What to Bring with you All registered students will receive a materials list & other materials from Jan as well as information from Rebecca at Sombra de la Lapa to answer all your questions before you arrive in Costa Rica. Some materials will also be supplied at the workshop.

• Accommodations. All accommodations are shared occupancy due to space limitations. Some will be sleeping in the Tree house that is currently being constructed around a guanacaste tree. Imagine - sleeping 40 ft. up in the canopy with the monkeys!

• Meals All three meals are provided by Rebecca & Mike at Sombra de la Lapa along with plenty of snacks, fruit drinks and water (The fresh water on the Osa Peninsula is the best water you will ever find). Bottled non alcoholic and alcholic drinks are available for sale.

• Each participant is responsible for:

• Valid passport that is valid for at least 6 months from date of departure from Costa Rica.

• Round trip airline reservations and tickets to San Jose International Airport (SJO) on Friday, January 29 (No exceptions. Try to arrive between 6 - 10:00 p.m.) returning on Sunday, February 7, 2010.

• 5 minute taxi ride to and from the B&B in Alajuela. The exact address will be provided and the taxi rides should only cost a few dollars each, less if shared.

• One meal in town on Beach and Town Day! There are several typical Costa Rican restaurants to choose from!

• A meal after you arrive and/or a meal before you depart. Breakfasts are included at the B&B and there are plenty of places to eat within easy walking distance of the B&B.

• Any inoculations prescribed by your physician. None are required by Costa Rica.

• Your $27 exit fee when you fly home.

• Cancellation policy: Spaces are reserved on a first deposit received basis. Once your place has been reserved, there will be a non-refundable cancellation charge of $100 prior to November 1. No refund less than 120 days unless we can replace your reservation with another student. Though I make every effort to be the instructor, in the event of unforeseen circumstances which prevents me from teaching, I have a substitute instructor ready to attend for the workshop.  If you still want to cancel, the refund can be only 70% for cancellations. We reserve the right to cancel any event, in which case you will receive a complete refund.

   

 

Jan Hart's Costa Rica Watercolor Workshop - in Jan's Backyard! . January 30 - February 7, 2010

"This is my very first workshop here in my town of San Isidro de El General - and the little rural village next hill over where we'll be painting and swimming and playing. I'm working with Estevan, the owner of Papâ de Pâramo to make this a wonderful event that I can improve on each year. We will enjoy all of the offerings at 'Papa's' - which includes covered painting area, gardens, river, swimming pool, full restaurant and our accommodations in the Hotel. In addition - this is where the locals come! So we'll be amidst the gracious Ticos! I'm in the process of arranging our tour bus and a possible afternnoon to the beach and to eat out at La Parcela - my favorite coastal restaurant. Stay tuned!"

Saturday, January 30 Arrive in Costa Rica and over Cerro Muerte through the Cloud Forest

• Arrival of all parties to Costa Rica. We will plan to arrive in San Jose (SJO) by noon on January 30. If you find that you need to come in the night before, Jan can arrange for an overnight stay at an inexpensive local B&B. Jan will be spending the night of Jan. 29 nearby so she can meet you at the airport and welcome you!

Day 1. Sunday, January 31Morning at Papas de Paramo. We'll be settling in and getting used to our new home and all the COLORS Evening at Jan's and then Bazookas for dinner.

• After a restful night, the sun will be coming up at 5:30 a.m - and we’ll be up for our first Costa Rican full breakfast at Papa de Pâramo by around 7 and into the studio by 8 for our first day.
• This day will focus on colors! We'll look around and find some Costa Rican nature to paint, with Jan providing a usual demo.
• Before dinner we'll drive up to Jan's house where she'll show a slide show on Color and Pigments - to help us drench our dreams in Costa Rica hues! Remember to bring along your copy of Jan's book, The Watercolor Artist's Guide to Exceptional Color. (Jan will have some extras on hand). Then off for dinner in town at Bazookas as Jan's guest.

Day 2. Monday, February 1 Morning and early afternoon at Papa de Pâramo. Color continued, Light, Shade, Shadows and Reflected Light

• We'll critique anything we painted yesterday - and get the valuable feedback needed to continue.
• Subject for Today will continue with COLOR as well as Light, Shade, Shadow & Reflected Light
• Jan will demo a floral subject from our garden walk yesterday and offer a slide show.
• Afternoon. We may visit Liliana's orchid gardens in Rivas where we can paint some of her beautiful orchids.
• Dinner wherever you would like to go. Taxis available. Or you can choose to stay and eat at Papas.

Day 3. Tuesday, February 2 To the River to paint water surrounded by Costa Rican plant and animal life...

• Morning in the Studio with an early morning critique from yesterday's work!
• Subject for Today Painting Water. Jan will show a slide show on the subject and do a demo.
• Late Afternoon. We'll be off in Jan's Car and taxi to Rivas, a nearby village with a spectacular walking area next to the river. We may sketch some there for paintings in the studio. Possible sightings of river animals, wild orchids and lots of bromeliads.

Day 4. Wednesday, February 3 Possible Beach Day - or some other delight AND dealing with Greens!

• Morning in the Studio with an early morning critique from yesterday's work!
• Jan will demonstrate ways to deal with GREEN and we'll do a 'Green Exercise'
• We may decide to go to the beach in the later afternoon with our sketch books and beach towels!
• Dinner at La Parcela (included in your fee) with our sarongs wrapped around our bathing suits and a flower behind each ear!

Day 5. Thursday, February 4 The Fruits and Vegetables of Costa Rica

• Morning in the Studio with an early morning critique from yesterday's work!
• After breakfast we'll be off to the Feria in downtown San Isidro where we'll shop for some fruits and/or vegetables and/or flowers to paint! The colors and shapes are unbelievable!
• Afternoon - Painting still lifes in the studio!
• We may decide to meet for a pool critique before dinner. What is a pool critique? That is where we line up the paintings on the deck and critique from inside the pool!
• Dinner wherever you'd like to go.

Day 6. Friday, February 5 The Travel Sketch and Subjects of choice

• Morning in the Studio with an early morning critique from yesterday's work!
• Using some of the photos from this workshop, Jan will teach about travel sketcing using ink and watercolor, crayons, etc.
• We'll paint our own choices of subjects in the studio.
• Dinner wherever you would like to go.

Day 7. Saturday, February 6

• Morning in the Studio.
• Subject for Today Finishing up a painting! Jan will demonstrate some finishing techniques.
• In the afternoon, we'll grab an open air taxi and go into town for a little sightseeing, sketching, shopping and then we'll wind it up at one of the local restaurants in town. We'll have dinner at one of the Miradors as Jan's guest.

Return to San Jose and home. February 7

• We'll have breakfast just before we pck up the van and head back overthe Cerro Muerte mountains to San Jose. Those who are leaving the next day can stay in a local B&B or hotel. Jan will help with bookings.
