Jan Hart's Costa Rica Watercolor Adventure- day by incredible day. January 30 - February 8, 2009
@ Sombra de la Lapa on the Osa Penninsula, Costa Rica
"This is an adventure painting trip that I hope to continue every year as long as I can. It energizes my creative spirit and teaches me more about color and color relationships than I have ever learned elsewhere - while the wonderful array of wildlife makes me remember that I am a part of the whole." Jan Hart
Friday, January 30 Arrive in Costa Rica
-
Arrival of all parties
to Costa Rica. We will plan to arrive in San Jose (SJO) on the evening of Friday, January 30. A 5 minute cab ride will get you to the Vida Tropical B&B where you will be greeted by Jan and the Tropical gang! Most all flights arrive late in the evening. We'll meet and greet and then get some rest. High speed WiFi Internet available.
Day 1. Saturday, January 31 To the Osa Peninsula & Sombra de la Lapa. COLORS
- After a restful night, we’ll be up for our first Costa Rican full breakfast with exotic seasonal fruits, omelette bar, fresh baked bread, organic eggs, jams & jellies and fruit filled pancakes..
- After breakfast we'll be off to the airport to catch a Nature Air flight over Costa Rica to the Osa Penninsula. We'll fly into the sleepy beach town of Puerto Jimenez and be driven by taxi up through the jungle to Sombra de la Lapas Eco-Lodge.
- Rebecca and Mike will acquaint us with our new home and treat us to a garden walk with our color wheels. Jan will offer color notes as we go.
Day 2, Sunday, Feb. 1
Day 3, Monday, Feb. 2 Sampling Costa Rica's Incredible Wildlife
- On this day we are sure to find a bright red bird or flower with which to celebrate Valentine’s Day! We will be exploring the Rio Chirripô Valley and visiting Rivas, a little village six kilometers east of San Isidro and known for its "Rock of the Indian", a giant rock carved with pre-Columbian indian motifs. Jan will be showing a slide presentation, “Light, Shade, Shadows & how to capture the effects of….” at some point during the day.
Day 4, Tuesday, Feb. 3.
- After an early breakfast, we’ll head out to Palmar Norte and then on to Sierpe, where we catch a boat for the 45 minute ride to Drake Bay, through Mangrove trees filled with wildlife. After our tours, we will be able to identify and see the abundant wildlife in the surrounding jungles. Leslie will talk with us about the history of the area and Jan will be discussing color & color relationships as well as wildlife. Finally we will reach our hotel and new home, Jinetes de Osa and enjoy a relaxing night, lulled to sleep by the beach & jungle sounds.
Day 5, Wednesday, Feb. 4
- After Breakfast we’ll meet in the Rancho, which is a covered open area that will serve as our studio while we are here. Leslie will introduce all the possible activities and scheduling. There are so many things to do here that it will take some planning. Our trip to Caño Island and the horseback ride are included in the trip. All other activities are at your expense, generally between $35 - $85/person. All activities can be arranged through the hotel, which is also a dive center, Costa Rica adventure Divers. Jan will begin our studio days with a slide show and demo on “Design”. All of our meals are here at Jinetes de Osa to allow for maximum flexibility and individual needs. Afternoon hike with Jan to discuss composition & design issues. Bring your camera.
Day 6, Thursday, Feb. 5
- Morning slide show & demo with Jan. From our Rancho overlooking Drake Bay, will can paint the water and watch the changes of the colors of the sky reflecting on the water. Afternoon free. We’ll meet at the Rancho for critique at 5, before dinner.
Day 7, Friday, Feb. 6
- Up early for our Caño Island tour! Caño Island Biological Reserve is a rainforest, archeological and marine sanctuary – 12 miles west of Drake Bay. Believed to be the burial ground of the Diquis Indian’s ruling elite, the island features pre Columbian stone spheres whose purpose is still shrouded in mystery. The peak one’s curiosity further, the island inexplicably receives more lightning strikes than nearly any other place on earth. Here you can hike the trails, learn more of the island’s history & ecology through a professional naturalist guide, swim, snorkel, lie in the sun, and/or paint! Caño Island’s greatest appeal is the calm turquoise waters of the pacific. It is ranked as a world-class dive and snorkeling destination and is nothing short of inspirational. Along with incredible parades of fish, adventure divers may witness a the whale shark or humpback whale, porpoises, hammerheads, Olive Ridley turtles, rays and white tip reef sharks in waters with excellent visibility and temperatures between 75 – 82 degrees F.
Day 8, Saturday, Feb. 7 Free Day

After the trip in 2005, Dee Ritchie wrote:
" Everything about this trip exceeded my expectations by orders of magnitude! I knew it would be fun and interesting, but everything about Costa Rica was brighter, softer, gentler, slower, sweeter, and more colorful than I could have imagined. There is a lifetime of gorgeous scenery to paint... sunsets, tropical flowers, mountainous coastlines, colorful birds... the most challenging part is deciding what to tackle first! Our guide, Leslita, was so hospitable and fun that she has become a wonderful friend whom I hope to travel with again and again. And Jan, I am eternally grateful for making me "see" in splendiferous back-lit technicolor! Howling monkeys, curious toucans, huge blue butterflies and soft tropical breezes... Why did we have to leave?" |
