I have made my decision to move, with my 2 dogs and (hopefully) my 4 parrots on Christmas Eve. My three sons and their partners (Tim's wife, Shelby and Jay's girlfriend, Alethea) will go with me to help me settle in.

I have decided that I will move whether or not Ranchito San Pedro is sold. I do hope this place I have loved for 15 years has a new owner. But I cannot afford to wait to see. Therefore, I am taking the affirmative stand of action. Moving. If you would like to keep track of what is going on with my move before, during and after - just check my Ongoing Open Letter to Everyone. I'll be adding to it to keep in touch until I get my computer DSL capabilities in Costa Rica - whenever that will be...... Remember - mañana doesn't mean tomorrow - it means 'not today'.

Leaving some equity and some furnishings behind, I am beginning anew in my little Tico house shown above, left. As you may know - I purchased this house on 1/4 acres of land just 4 miles north of San Isidro de El General with the help of Jane Gregson and Mike Wilson, two realtors and tour guide - friends I highly recommend. They were the second part of a tour I took in February called Live in Costa Rica on your Social Security with George Lundquist which I also highly recommend! Jane and Mike helped me find a place I could afford. Because I am a self employed artist and teacher, I've spent the savings I had on the house and am moving with very little money. To do the things I dream of doing in Costa Rica, I'm going to have to be very creative and ask for some help...

So here are some Win-Win creative solutions I've come up with...a creative vacation for you - and help for me....

  • Help with a Project. Come help me with a Project at my new place - and I'll provide you with an Adventure at little or no cost! I'll plan to pick you up at the airport in San Jose and bring you to my humble little house. If the sleeping cabinas are not yet built, I'll arrange for you to stay at La Princessa, right down the road for $25/night. We'll eat inexpensively and still have a great time! We can include several wonderful daytrips as time permits. Each project builder will have his/her name on the project visible to ALL!

  • Purchase a Painting (see what is available under Paintings and Prints an - I'm in the process of adding more) and I'll discount it up to 40% and ship it to you FREE before I leave! I need the $ to build sleeping cabinas and an open air studio which I'll describe below.

  • Come for a workshop in Costa Rica - and I'll show you places you'll never find on your own!

Workshop #1 Sombra de Lapas on the Osa Penninsula January 30 - February 8, 2009. $2550 covers it all once you are in Costa Rica except for 1 meal at the beginning and 1 meal at the end. See all the details here. We have room for 2 more students!

More Workshops will be planned once I'm in Costa Rica! Email me here to be notified when more are planned.

I'll be elaborating on this very soon! Email me here for details so far....

I am moving to Costa Rica

and I welcome help....

I'll be adding to it as I think of more ideas. If you have an idea, please suggest to me by emailing me here.

I took this picture from the place where the open studio will be built. Imagine seeing the sunsets beyond and eating mangoes from the mangoe tree shown. The aviary will be built on this side of the 2nd window - my bedroom window.

Some Projects I need help with....

  • Outdoor Shower. This project involves knowledge/skill in building and plumbing. I'll pay for all of the materials and make sure you have the right tools. The project has been planned for February, 2009 with Alice and Rick Bonner! The outdoor shower will bear a plaque with the Bonner name on it! Rick plans to do it in one week. And - we'll play, too! As extra incentive, Rick gets plenty of design imput.
  • Tile the Counter Top . After the kitchen countertops are built they will need to be tiled. Costa Rica has some wonderful tiles available and I will plan to find them and get them to the house with the materials needed. We can do the tile work together.

  • Building the Aviary. I'll be bringing my four parrots to Costa Rica, if all goes well. It is very very difficult to bring birds into Costa Rica. The advice and regulations change and I am now in the process of working through a professional pet transport person. My birds are my family - and my dream is to build a small aviary on the east side of my house, just outside my bedroom. It'll likely be about 4' x 6' with a partial roof to keep rain off and will be built of sturdy wire with a concrete base that can be hosed down. There may be an indoor part, too - going into my bedroom and adjoining bathroom so the birds can shower, too. It is difficult to plan from here but can be better visualized once I get there!

  • Raised Flower/Vegetable Beds. I am thinking that some raised beds will be easier for me to tend and I love the idea. We'll figure out together what materials to use!

  • Building the Open Air Studio. The Open Air Studio is the primary building project. I will look to have the basics done before recruiting help. Still -if you have building expertise - I'm thinking about something like this.

  • Suggest a Project!

This is typical wood post, metal roof construction with tile floor. Even though this is a restaurant, something like this could work for the open air studio.

Open On-Going Letter.....

November 10, 2008

Great News! I just received word from Angela, the Animal Transport Specialist that my 4 parrots have been accepted into Costa Rica and out of the U.S.A. All the parrots seem very happy! My dogs shouldn't be a problem except that I'm going during the Christmas season and they won't guarantee room for the dogs....Hm.

November 1, 2008

I've finally recovered from the huge sale and am now setting about doing the things that I must do to move. Today I will get my empty house in order and throw out more things that didn't sell. Then.....

  • Pack pack pack.

By Thanksgiving time I need to have everything packed that is going - and on its way. First it will go to Miami in a truck and then will make its way to Costa Rica by ship. It would be wonderful to have it all waiting for me at my little house in San Rafael.

  • Keep in touch with my Animal Transport Specialist, Angela
  • Arrange for my Website and email while I'm in transit and getting settled.
  • Have a party/celebration in my studio to say good-bye to my friends. I plan to take along small special things from dear ones that I can place on a Remembrance shelf above my windows. That way - when I get lonely - I can just see my friends all around me. More planning needs to be done on this one.

October, 2008

Last weekend was the HUGE Estate/Moving Sale here at Ranchito San Pedro. I had hoped to find someone to do this sale for me but times are hard and the person available declined due to the economics. She felt that people would not want to drive from Santa Fe or Albuquerque unless I had a lot of high end items. I did not. Plus, she would take 40%. So - I decided to do it myself, with as much help as I could get. From May on I began going through the hundreds of life treasures so many of us carry along with us throughout life. High school yearbooks, 6 year old drawings, crocheted quilts for each of the kids and Mike's first hand sewn Halloween costume. After some discussion with each of my three sons, I set them aside for sale or donation and continued on to the next item. It wasn't just the house contents! I had a house, large studio, garage and one of the casitas full of furniture, housewares, art supplies and treasures. Son, Mike was here to help and Tim flew in from Seattle to help with the last 4 days of pricing, sorting, organizing and selling. Friends volunteered - and I advertised on the highway and in the local papers. On Saturday, October 25 at 9 a.m. we began and hardly had a chance to look up until it wound down for that day. Sunday was a bit slower but got busy again when we dropped prices to 1/2 at noon! It was amazing! There were times when people were lined up to buy - $1 here, $2 there.

On Monday I took a cigar box full of bills and coins that totaled nearly $7,000 to the bank! Now I can be sure that my two precious dogs and 4 parrots can get to Costa Rica with me via a Pet Transport specialist, Angela. Funny - when I look around at the empty rooms and the few things that are left I find an odd assortment. It is as if invisible hands have purposely selected the items that did not sell. Those things left behind are the very things that I was not sure I wanted to part with. The fainting couch that makes me laugh. The violet-purple salad bowl that looks so beautiful with salad greens. The big soft floral pillow. They remain behind to offer one more chance for me to decide.

I am exhausted. I have two classes to teach this week and am hoping to have the energy to do it. Thank you, dear friends and family who have helped with the "Pre-Death Estate Sale". I highly recommend it and my kids are very grateful.
